(This page for reference only - RFP is closed and funds are awarded.)

Request for Proposals for Fiscal Year 2005
NAU’s Environmental Research, Development & Education for the New Economy (ERDENE) is requesting proposals from NAU faculty or teams of faculty, students and staff for one year projects that can accomplish environmental research applicable to solving real-world problems in Arizona and create new employment opportunities. Multi year projects may be described, but initial awards will be for a maximum of 12 months. Awards will be made for up to $100,000.

The topics of highest priority are those with strong attention to the Battelle Memorial Institute Report and the TRIF report.

Proposals will be peer-reviewed and ranked by a panel of external reviewers. The ERDENE Steering committee may add additional observations or recommendations. The final award selections will be made by NAU’s Vice Provost for Research. Proposals are due by Friday, April 9, 2004. Submissions should be routed to Judy Buzard in Peterson Hall, room 305 or via e-mail (Judy.Buzard@nau.edu). Proposals should be no longer than ten double-spaced pages, plus budget and appendices.

Evaluation Criteria:
1) Environment and Economy:

  • Does this project focus on an important environmental topic or issue?

  • Will this project advance Arizona’s economy and work force opportunities, e.g. spin off businesses, business expansions, jobs outside the university.

2) Scientific Merit:

  • Is this proposal based on good natural and social science?

  • Will it advance scientific applications to real-world problem solving?

3) Project feasibility:

  • Are the goals and objectives realistic within the proposed budget, staff and resources in the time line projected?

  • Do project participants have the requisite knowledge and skills to carry out the project?

4) Project collaborations and sustaining resources:

  • Does the project include businesses, non-profit entities or agency collaborators?

  • Is there a plan to acquire additional resources for project implementation and continuation?

There will be an informal forum for interested parties to discuss proposal content. The tentative date for this forum is March 11, 2004. The forum will be held from 3:30 to 5:00 in the Freemont Room in the Du bois Conference Center.
