Biological field stations: an opportunity to walk the
talk
12:00 Noon
University Union, Havasupai A/B
Philippe S. Cohen, Ph.D., Administrative Director
Stanford University, Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve
Description of Talk:
Biological field stations are major (if hidden)
contributors to our understanding of important environmental issues
of the past century. Field stations need to improve their commitment
to sustainable infrastructure, not only for the message it sends,
but because it bears directly upon their long-term viability.
About Dr. Philippe Cohen
Dr. Philippe Cohen is currently
Administrative Director of Stanford University's Jasper Ridge
Biological Preserve. Dr. Cohen is also President of the Board of
Trustees of the Golden Gate Biopshere Reserve Association and
Vice-President of the Organization of Biological Field Stations.
Prior to his current position, Dr. Cohen was the first resident
director of the newly created University of California Granite
Mountains Reserve (renamed Sweeney Granite Mountains Desert Research
Center) for over 7 years. While at this remote field station, Dr.
Cohen managed and supervised the construction of stand-alone
sustainable research facilities funded primarily by an NSF grant.
Dr. Cohen holds an undergraduate degree in environmental studies
from Pitzer College and received his Ph.D. in 1986 from the
University of Minnesota's Department of Geography. Dr. Cohen was
also employed at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources where
he was instrumental in developing and implementing Minnesota's
statewide shoreland management plan.
