The Future of Community
Conference: Creating a Sustainable Vision for Arizona and the
American West
Saturday,
March 5,
9:15 - 5:00 p.m.
Los Abrigados Resort, Sedona
This event is a collaborative effort bringing together some of
America’s leading thinkers to discuss the future of community in the
American West. How will our communities adapt to the changing world
of the twenty-first century? How will oil prices, water scarcity,
energy production, transportation and our economy be transformed
over the next generation, and how will these changes affect the way
we envision and create our communities?
The goal of this event is to provide quality information and ideas
to our state’s government, business and community leaders. The
conference will focus on finding practical and innovative solutions
to our current economic and social challenges with presentations by
Governor Napolitano (unconfirmed), Hunter Lovins, Antony Browne,
Vernon Swaback, James Bishop Jr., and Jonathan Duncan.
Hunter Lovins is an internationally recognized leader in helping
companies and communities profit from more sustainable practices.
She has authored or co-authored numerous books including Natural
Capitalism, and was named as a Time magazine Hero for the
Planet in 2000.
Vernon Swaback is one of America’s preeminent architects and
community planners. He currently serves as Chairman of the Frank
Lloyd Wright Foundation, and is the author of numerous books, most
recently, The Creative Community.
Anthony Brown is the founder and director of the Ecosa Institute of
Sustainable Design and has over thirty years experience in
architecture, planning and environmental design.
James Bishop, Jr. served for many years as the Washington bureau
correspondent for Newsweek, as well as in the Energy
Department during the Carter administration. He is a leading
authority on energy and public lands issues, and is the author of
The Desert Anarchist.
CSE's Gary Nabhan and Gary Deason will
both be presenting a program, entitled "Advancing Sustainable
Practices in Northern Arizona" at this conference.
The event will include presentations, breakout groups addressing
problems and opportunities, and a panel discussion on the future of
community.
